The Shared Path to Success initiative, a policy presented by the
Department of Education in 2012, was introduced to increase disabled students’
enrollment in screened schools. It requires schools to provide students with
disabilities equal chance to get accepted into their program. As
a result, over the last five years the number of disabled students registered
in screened schools has tripled. Furthermore, The Department of Education is
working to further increase the percentage of special-needs students in these
schools.
As more disabled children
are being integrated in the system, teachers have to adjust their teaching
methods and curriculum to fit their needs. These educators always taught high achievers,
so although they had to cater to everyone’s unique strengths and interests,
they have never dealt with such a diverse group. Now they must make changes to ensure
equal learning opportunities for all. By applying the UDL Standards, teachers
can reach every student. Teachers should also make use of technological
resources, such as e-books, to engage all types of learners. Most importantly,
teachers should model to the students respect and inclusion towards the
disabled children. In this way, the students will follow suit and accept those
who seem different.
To sum it up, in response
to the increase of disabled pupils, teachers must adjust their teaching methods
to maximize the learning experience for all.
