Lesson Analysis on UDL
The first lesson on the lifecycle of butterflies correctly
incorporated UDL standards. The teacher ensured that all students will gain
from this lesson by addressing the diverse students needs. She guaranteed that
all three parts of learning are addressed by clearly stating the lesson goals,
which is what they will be learning, discussed why it is beneficial
to learn about the butterfly stages, and illustrated clearly how they
will go about learning it.
To ensure that there are no barriers preventing students from
understanding the concept, she included multiple means of representation, action
and expression, and engagement. First, she began by explaining what she will be
teaching and then asked the students why they think it’s important to learn about
butterflies. Afterwards, to cater to everyone’s skills and interest, she presented
the content in many ways. She began by
brainstorming whatever the class knew about the topic, then read a book aloud,
showed a film and displayed images of the different stages of the butterflies. The
students also drew pictures of the lifecycle of butterflies. In this way
everyone grasped the same knowledge in the way that best suited their needs. In
addition, she encouraged student expression by giving them a chance to share their
prior knowledge in the brainstorming session at the beginning of the class. At the end of the lesson, she encouraged students
to share what they had gained from the lesson and present their center projects.
She also provided feedback as she walked around during center time. Furthermore,
by giving them choices throughout the lesson she kept the students engaged. For
instance, after the teacher modeled how they will do their work the students
chose whether they preferred to work in peers or independently and selected which
centers they wanted to join. This increased their level of motivation.
To sum it up, this lesson plan is a great way to teach all
types of students the lifecycle of butterflies. By incorporating the UDL principles
and providing students with a flexible curriculum that addresses the why, how and
what of learning in a clear way, the teacher provided a learning experience for
all.
Hi Mindy, I chose this lesson plan as well, and I enjoyed reading your take on it! I thought the teacher planned lots of great activities for her diverse learners, I do think that this lesson could take at least two days to complete..
